Deutschlandfunk

My art work Beys Feygele was mentioned in this cultural radio segment. They described my artwork very strangely saying the color was “screaming pink”, and were incorrect about it being paper mache. The host also didn’t say my name, maybe they thought Beys Feygele was an artist collective. You can hear that part at 3:00

Queere Geschichte(n). Erinnerungen und Visionen im Anschluss an Leslie Feinbergs

Two years ago I facilitated a workshop on Queer Trans Jewish Futures for the conference honoring the 30th anniversary of Stone Butch Blue’s publication. Afterwards I was asked to contribute something to this book alongside other conference presentors, and I asked if I could include my art, and this is the book!

Letters To Berlin -Cultures of Rememberance Exhibition

Authors Kai* Brust, Hani חאני Esther Indictor Portner

Languages: Audiofiles with spoken word in German and English. Written transcripts in German and English. 6 texts available as mp3 Audio-file and written transcript. 1 photo of Hella Knabe. 5 paintings on canvas.

“Letters to Berlin” is a project of the alternative trans culture of remembrance by TIN* people for TIN* people. This culture of remembrance is intended to be empowering, which is not so easy when it comes to the topic of National Socialism. Nevertheless, it does exist: Documents that look at the lives of trans people through the eyes of those affected and not through the eyes of the police, authorities or medicine. These include the “Letters to Berlin”. Within the exhibition the letters are accompanied by a picture of the seamstress Hella Knabe and paintings on canvas by the artist Hani חאני Esther Indictor Portner. Under every audio you can find the English-Language transcript.

This was commissioned to support a session discussing a rare mention of lesbian relations in Talmud (Shabbat 65a-b), as a way to show that queer Jews have always been around, even when history has minimized their memory.

Hani Portner (they/fae) paints and shares the lives of trans and queer people involved with Magnus Hirschfeld’s Institute @friends_of_dora.

Stone Butch Blues Conference

Jewish QT Futures Format: workshop (engl.)

Leslie Feinberg’s Jewish identity is often downplayed/overlooked even though it was an important part of hir identity and life, activism, and community. Zie did come from a larger movement of Jewish lesbians and that community is so important to acknowledge and understand in the context of hir work and perspectives. Hir revolutionary ideals and work lend themselves to revolutionary imaginations of queer and trans futures, which this workshop will explore in discussions using creative group dreaming and envisioning structures, spaces, and times that feel right, beautiful, and just. As a Jewish person I want to center conversations and exchanges with other Jewish people involved in the conference. There are not enough spaces to embrace and celebrate being Jewish and Queer and Trans and this space of exchange is what this workshop is about. Allies and co-conspirators are also welcome, but the focus is on Queer and Transgender Jews.

Discussion will include our personal experiences as queer Jews in academia, Feinberg’s biography and life as a Jewish queer activist, context around themes of antisemitism in queer and leftist communities, and textual analysis of how Feinberg wrote about their Jewish identity.

Remembrance Event Book Exchange, 90 years since May 6 1933

During its 14 year existence, the institute for sexual science (1919-1933) provided gender-affirming care, counseling, surgeries, and community support. Led by Magnus Hirschfeld, queer, trans*, Jewish people who found shelter here have danced, talked, feasted, and celebrated Shabbat in each other’s loving arms. Hani Portner’s audio portrait engages us in a conversation with the land about reclamation, revitalization and retaliation while recounting the people’s stories. Imagine yourself as a mushroom – by envisioning ourselves as mycelium, connecting, entangling, and supporting, we can build something beautiful together, in solidarity with the marginalized and honor our trancestors.
