Rabbi Avigayil Halpern and Hani invite you to join a magical springtime lake adventure and mikvah learning and ritual for LGBTQ+ Jews. Hani will lead us through the Tegel forest to a secluded spot where we can enjoy the teachings from Rabbi Avigayil before we take the plunge! For many of us as queer Jews it can be hard to access a traditional mikveh, and so this is a very special opportunity to gather in community to keep each other safe, learn about our traditions, and enjoy feeling closer to Hashem with this mitzvah of transition.
Rabbi Avigayil Halpern (she/her) is a writer and educator passionate about Torah and mitzvot as a set of relationships: with each other, with God, with our ancestors, and with ourselves. She is currently the Rabbinic Fellow at Hillel Deutschland, and has trained intensively in Jewish texts about ritual immersion as part of her rabbinic training, and has also completed an additional training program with Rising Tide Network of Community Mikvaot. She regularly teaches queer and straight people about Jewish laws about mikvah as a private tutor, and is at work on a book on a related topic. She is currently a (remote) Scholar In Residence at the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute at Brandeis University in the US working on this book. Rabbi Halpern has also taught on these topics for Mayyim Hayyim, a nationally known American progressive mikvah
Hani is a nature lover who has been creating Queer and Jewish community events for the past five years in Berlin. They have extensive knowledge of medicinal plants and mushrooms and give tours in the Tegel forest each summer and fall to teach foraging skills and Jewish Berlin history. Last summer they organized and ran a Moishe house Peer Led Retreat for the Berlin Queer and Jewish community
